Zoom H4n review: Zoom H4n - CNET
The stereo microphones included on the Zoom H4n are anchored into a solid chunk of aluminum and rotate around for 90-degree and 120-degree recording patterns. Design features such as microphones encased in solid aluminum and a spacious 2-inch screen may be the first details to catch your eye, but its the small things that really have us loving the H4n.
The Zoom H4n is a 96 kHz/24-bit portable digital recorder that runs on two AA cells, its included AC adapter or USB power. It comes complete with its own microphones. Originally designed for musicians, the Zoom H4n has become especially popular with DSLR video and filmmakers over other portable recorders because it has direct XLR mic input connectors with phantom power, and because it can record as many as four channels at once from both the built-in mics as well as from two external sources.

I can't speak for the Tascam, but I've had the H4n (not the PRO version mind you) for several years and I've gotten a ton of use out of it from field and foley recording to practicing bass (onboard tuner, metronome, and amp models). The built in mics sound good enough and you have an upgrade path with the XLR combo inputs if you want to beef up your production later, not to mention...

Just wanted to add that I've tried a few time getting the H4n with my laptop as an interface with Presonus Studio One and Samplitude, and the latency is pretty bad. I can deal with the usual tiny bit of latency you get, but this is too much. I also notice they haven't updated the ASIO drivers for this since 2008.

The four buttons also come into play when using the Zoom in multitracking mode. Yes, you heard me right: the H4 also has the power to be a four-track in your pocket! Furthermore, two effects units are built-in, and cover a large range of preset effects, from mic and amp simulators, through the usual modulation, reverb and delay effects, to compression and...

Using the Zoom H4N - Recording Levels? at DVinfo.net | Forum
The biggest difficulty with the H4 is the levels are not easily accessed for adjustments and the buttons employed are extremely noisy forcing you to either to purchase their remote or to use an external mic. As a consequence when left unattended, like at the podium, its easy to set the wrong levels because of the small margin of error.
Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong place- I am new to the forum (and Reaper). I' hoping someone else has run into a similar issue- Been having a complete headache with my audio interface -a Zoom H4N. Sometimes it co-operates - but very glitchy, stopping and starting all the time. Generally it won't co-operate at all- not just with reaper but with any audio programme at all. It will neither play or record. I have the correct driver although I have tried...
